If you like a little culture in your holiday, then why not visit one of the best preserved walled cities in Europe? They have a romantic and historic air about them, and as they haven't changed much in centuries, you can imagine the knights and soldiers who used to hold these cities dear.
Lucca, Italy – Lucca is stunning due to the bend of nature and humanity. The walls to the city were built in the sixteenth century, and later, in the nineteenth century, trees were planted along the top. You can now walk or cycle along them.
Rhodes, Greece – surrounded by walls and a moat, this medieval city has a castle and is steeped in history. The walls and city have been kept to a high standard.
Avila, Spain – there isn't much to do here, so it's best to include Avila in with a day terip tp Madrid, but these are the most preserved city walls in Spain, dating back from the eleventh century.
Carcassonne, France – located south of Paris, these walls date back as far as the sixth century, and are the best preserved walls of their era.
There are ruins all around the area, so there is much else to see and do in the city, but the view from the top of the walls is magnificent.Girona, Spain – the walls of this city were destroyed and have subsequently been rebuilt, but its still a great sight. Walk the walls of this Roman city and see a conversion of architecture from different cultures.
